MKM Hero, for everyday heroes

20
MKM Flame Light, the folder dagger that burns!

With this Hero, MKM has created a knife that will go down in history.

Yes, because just as in Norse mythology the God Thor was flanked by his hammer, MKM with designer Tommaso Rumici have come up with a knife for modern-day heroes such as the police, public safety, military but also adventurers and ordinary users.

Today we are going to look at it in detail and, as always, I will accompany it with my personal experience and impressions.

Seeing it when closed, we can see how harmonious it is, the profiles that make it up, such as the soft back of the blade with no 90° angles, make us realise that this is a gentleman's knife. On the whole without any major edges, which also makes it not at all annoying in concealed carry despite its 'important' dimensions.

Yes, because many will say that it is not an EDC, but despite its size it also lends itself well to everyday use.

A tough knife, a knife that is not afraid of being mistreated, not afraid of harsh environments.

Let's take a look at its technical data sheet:

Destination: Sporting, tactical, military.

Country of manufacture: Maniago - Italy

Blade: Stainless steel M390 60/61HRC

Blade treatment: stonewashed

Handle: G-10 TAN and titanium liners and heads

Blade length: 93mm.

Blade thickness: 4mm.

Weight: 175g.

Length when closed: 130mm.

Total length: 215mm.

Closure: Back Lock

Clip: titanium, removable, deep pocket type

Sheath: Synthetic material pouch with zip and belt loop closure

Packaging: Cardboard box with MKM Maniago Knife Makers logos

Notes: Design by Tommaso Rumici

Let's begin with an analysis of its component parts.

My version is the one you see in the photo, which is the version with the G-10 TAN handle.

Drop point blade in BöHLER M390 steel (my absolute favourite steel and at the top of the world's best knife steels) with a stonewashed finish, very well sharpened.

The strategic peg for one-handed opening whether right or left-handed, and the ball-bearing mechanism that gives it a smooth movement.

The spring and lever is also stonewashed stainless steel, while all the hardware that fastens it is stainless steel.

To round it all off, its characteristic ring on a central titanium screw, and reversible clip in micro-bead-blasted titanium.

It is completed by a sand-coloured G10 handle, one-piece insignia and titanium liner.

The back lock is not the usual back-loaded one, but has been advanced for simple, fast and practical locking.

Let us now go on to describe this in more detail.

In this description we will understand the whole strategy behind Hero.

Many details such as the clip, which is reversible, thus adaptable to the dominant hand, emphasise its versatility.

The clip is fixed with torx screws and is made of titanium, and the MKM logo with its mountain landscape splash is milled onto it.

Even its opening/locking system is no coincidence, in fact back-lock is an excellent solution for ambidextrous use (unlike systems such as frame look, liner look etc.).

As we can see, the blade opening also has an ambidextrous philosophy, thanks to the pins installed on both sides of the blade.

I have heard some people complain a bit about the opening, calling it a bit difficult to open fully with one hand.

From my experience, I can say that I have not found this problem at all. Of course, it also depends on the practicality of the operator.

To open Hero easily, just add thumb pressure with a little flick of the wrist, the rest will come by itself, I guarantee.

If you don't want to snap it open, you can also comfortably accompany the blade with the thumb itself through the entire angle of rotation.

Closing is also easy with just one hand, be it left or right.

The knurls for extra thumb grip run from the bottom of the blade to the beginning of the clamping bar.

It is therefore impossible not to notice the search for systems for both right- and left-handed use.

Why this quest to create such a versatile knife?

Precisely because of its purpose.

In a tactical or sporting environment, having a knife that is ambidextrous means facilitating the operator's activities, and in these areas a tenth of a second can make all the difference.

Let us come to the details of the handle.

The handle has no annoying protrusions, which translates into extreme comfort in keeping it concealed inside the edge of the trousers and less injury to the hands in prolonged use.

Apart from the blade, the handle in particular lets me know when a knife has been designed by Tommaso Rumici.

Usually they are always handles that lend themselves comfortably to multiple grips, either straight or reverse, handles that facilitate the use of the blade in multiple uses.

In fact, it is enough to grasp with the index finger at the central pivot, with the other fingers on the handle to have a knife that lends itself well to fine work.

Or tighten it towards the final curvature for more energy in heavy work, play with your little finger on the end part to be able to change the angle.

A hole to pass a lanyard through completes it, which could also be useful for a quick draw.

A clever handle, which greatly changes the knife's abilities depending on how you use it.

To complete the picture, a handy pouch as a sheath made of synthetic material with a zip fastener and belt loop.

This knife is powerful, giving confidence in its commitment.

It is intelligent, studied in detail to be a leader in every situation.

A knife that is sure to leave an imprint in the history of MKM, a knife between reality and mythology, simply HERO.

Enjoy your adventures,
