Notes on the Designer
Michael Walker is to the knife industry what Michael Jordan is to basketball or Wayne Gretsky to hockey. He shattered established standards, leaping into uncharted terrain and elevating the art of cutlery to greater heights of innovation and modernity.
In 1980 the folding knife industry had few locking innovations and there was only the traditional Back Lock. In 1981 Walker invented, developed and ultimately branded the Michael Walker LinerLock® by adding a leaf spring that locked the blade open, making it a true one-handed folding knife. He has also included a latch to keep the blade closed using the spring force of the inner folder so that it does not open in a user's pocket.
This innovation has opened the doors of modern cutlery, allowing many new designs and future developments up to the current SubFrame Lock, Frame Lock, Flipper Folder and IKBS opening systems on ball bearings.
Other inventions include the "Lake and Walker Safety System" or LAWKS, BLADELock, Ball bearing lock, and Tough Lock.
Some of the production houses he has collaborated with include Spyderco, Columbia River Knife and Tool, Schrade, Böker and Klotzli.
Walker's knives and designs have inspired many other custom knife manufacturers, most notably Bob Terzuola and Ernest Emerson. Terzuola credits Walker with teaching him how to make a linerlock satchel and Emerson said seeing Walker's knife at a gun show inspired him to become a knifemaker.
Walker's knives can be found at the Artifex Gallery in Taos and in the most prestigious collections around the world.
