The pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia used as a symbol a shell (Coquille St.Jaques for the French), which could be collected on the beach of the ocean not far away and served in a symbolic and practical way to collect the water from the streams or springs during the long and often tiring journey.
