La leggenda lo fa risalire ai tempi del regno di re Riccardo Cuor di Leone. Questo popolare eroe, fuorilegge, viveva nella foresta di Sherwood con la sua banda di seguaci. Famoso come benefattore dei poveri e degli oppressi contro i potenti. La lama è in acciaio priva di filo a sezione esagonale, il fornimento è in metallo fuso con dettagli decorativi placcati in oro; il pomo è a ruota crociata all'interno. L'impugnatura è in pelle nera alternata ad anelli in metallo fuso decorato placcato in oro.
