The Damascus Wootz:
The first type of steel that we know of, manufactured in India since at least 300 AD (but some date back to 200 BC), his name is the anglicized version of the name Hindu Steel (ukku). Was prepared in closed crucibles sealed, which contained iron ore, coal and glass. The crucibles were then put to the flame and heated: the iron melted, enriched with carbon and glass absorbing impurities as they fused, floating on the surface. The result was a steel with a high carbon content and high purity. This technique spread very slowly, arriving in neighboring countries (today's Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) only in 900 AD about. The Indian technique took a long time to arrive in Europe, where she became known only in the seventeenth, but no one here knew how to repeat the manufacture of steel wootz for another century.
Roselli has recently developed a similar method to develop this kind of damask and got blades with exceptional cutting capacity, comparable to their famous UHC.
