The way of doing the Roman army was direct and pragmatic and that is why they chose the gladius as their main sword since it was from the beginning practical, efficient, lethal and excellent in any combat situation; both cut and stock.
At the end of the 1st century AD a new model of gladius the Pompeii type was introduced. This one had a straight blade and a shorter tip the size ranged from 420mm to 500mm with a width between 42 - 45mm.It was much more balanced than the Mainz type and was suitable for causing cutting and lunging wounds. models had a bone or wooden handle protected by a wooden guard and were counterbalanced by a wooden knob.

Nel I secolo d.c. venne adottato dall'esercito Romano. Il pugio veniva usato nel combattimento corpo a corpo, quando si era così vicini al nemico che il gladio non poteva servire più a niente.
