The Herring dagger is one of the most loved military knives by enthusiasts.

Its original name is Fairbairn Sykes or Commando Dagger and it was present in the endowment of the British Commandos.

A dagger that entered Italian history in World War II, thanks to the exploits of young soldiers of the 1st "Folgore" Reconnaissance Squadron, who were equipped with this weapon during Operation Herring. He has behind him a heroic piece of history that is rarely talked about, despite the fact that these young boys, thanks to their devotion to the cause and their courage, have written an important page in Italian history.

Extrema Ratio wanted to pay homage to this dagger trying to remain faithful to the original forms, while using the most modern production techniques.

The very special hand-made finish of the handle simulates the aging of brass and gives the dagger a dated look, similar to the original.

The dagger was developed in collaboration with the 185th RAO and adopted as a ceremonial commemorative dagger for the 20th anniversary of the regiment's establishment and the 75th anniversary of the Herring mission.

The knife is equipped with a polymer case with historical frieze of the F Squadron, leather / kydex sheath with brass tip and two commemorative scrolls.

The Smilodon, commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, was an extinct large feline that lived during the Pleistocene, between 2.5 million and 10,000 years ago. It was a member of the felid family and was distinguished by its unique features, particularly its huge saber-shaped upper canines.

The Smilodon was larger than present-day tigers, with a length of about 1.6-1.8 meters and a height at withers of about 1 meter. Its weight could range from 200 to 400 kilograms. The Smilodon's most distinctive feature were its upper canines, which could reach a length of more than 20 centimeters. These canines were extremely sharp and adapted for grasping and stinging prey. Only 9 exclusive pieces of this excellent bushcraft knife produced by Fox of Maniago have been made, using for this edition the Japanese V-Toku2 steel in 5mm Sanmai produced by the Japanese Takefu Steel instead of the Niolox used in the standard model. 

Specifically, the central sheet is the carbonaceous V-Toku2 at 62/63HRC and on the outer cheeks there is the stainless SUS410, so as to ensure not only a beautiful aesthetic effect, but also a very high cutting capacity, penetration and edge retention along with easy resharpening and maintenance. In collaboration with Wander Tactical we have decided to propose their heavy duty, the Smilodon model, in an exclusive satin blade version that uses the famous Japanese steel San Mai produced by Takefu Steel. Specifically, for the central plate we used the 61.5HRC CoS (Cobalt Special, mechanically considered 25% higher than the already highly appreciated VG10) and the 420J2 (at 56 HRC) for the two side plates in order to guarantee a very high cutting capacity, but at the same time a remarkable resistance to abrasion, resilience and oxidation resistance.

Dedicated to those who are more at ease with a knife with a more classic profile, the VENOM is characterized by a wide, flat main grind.

Less suitable for combat, it is best expressed in field and precision work (thanks to the lower angle of sharpening).

It is a multirole of great utility in hunting and outdoor sports. The profile and the general outline of the blade are inspired by the Italian and Austro / Hungarian battle blades of the first half of the 20th century.

The particular situation created in the early years of the 1914/18 war, now mired in increasingly complex and protected trenches and fortifications, favored the formation of men who, little by little, specialized in the coup.

Our assault units, the Arditi, had their dagger. It was obtained from the pieces cut away by the long blades of the Vetterli 1870 bayonets, which in the narrow trenches, in the corridors, between the reticulars were only an obstacle. It was certainly a rustic weapon, of recovery, not too beautiful but certainly inexpensive, light, not cumbersome and in expert hands also effective.

Today, on the occasion of the centenary, we recall this important page of Italian military history with a limited celebratory series in only 100 numbered copies. This version has a satin blade and a walnut wood handle and is sold with a wooden box and leather sheath.
