The Helmschmied of Augsburg, Germany, were one of the most important late medieval European families of armorari / gunsmiths. Their name, sometimes also spelled Helmschmid, translates to "blacksmith helmet". The most important members of the family were Lorenz Helmschmied (active in 1467, died in 1515), Kolman Helmschmied (1471-1532) and Desiderio Helmschmied (1513-1579)
