The pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia used as a symbol a shell (Coquille St.Jaques for the French), which could be collected on the beach of the ocean not far away and served in a symbolic and practical way to collect the water from the streams or springs during the long and often tiring journey. Precisely the shell, over time, became the emblem in general of the pilgrim. the shell is a universal sacred symbol, both as a ritual tool and as an ornamental motif.
