Japanese steel meets Italian excellence

For this 2020 collaboration, exclusively for Coltelleria Collini, we decided to offer a series of best sellers produced by Extrema Ratio. These knives are made using the renowned San Mai steel produced by Japan’s Takefu Steel. Specifically, we used carbon-rich V-Toku2 at 62/63HRC for the central core and stainless SUS410 for the outer layers, resulting in superior cutting performance, penetration, edge retention, ease of sharpening, and at the same time excellent corrosion resistance and increased resilience due to the laminated structure.

Model Col Moschin Compact: this First Production Run was limited to 15 numbered units, from 1 to 15.

The lethal efficiency of the COL MOSCHIN knife, now in compact version. Comes with a rigid belt sheath and BELT-CLIP. The sheath can be mounted horizontally, vertically, or at a 45° angle.

The laminated steel – imported into Italy by Collini Steel directly from Japan’s Takefu Steel – is based on the age-old Japanese sword-making tradition. As early as the 1100s, Japanese blacksmiths were combining different metals to craft Katana swords with extraordinary cutting power, resistance, and flexibility. This revolutionary technique allowed Samurai swords to survive through centuries and become among the most fascinating human-made artifacts. Applied to modern metallurgy, this tradition now yields advanced steels already used in knife-making by brands like Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, etc.

San Mai Steel Features: A combination of different metals bonded together to create a composite with amplified properties:

- Greater edge retention
Thanks to high-carbon premium steels (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or powder steels (SPG2) in the core, once hardened, the blade achieves cutting performance far superior to traditional steels.

- Higher resilience
Based on Japanese sword construction, the multi-layer steel is highly resistant to breaking due to the toughness of the core and flexibility of the stainless cladding.

- Improved corrosion resistance
The outer stainless layers ensure high corrosion resistance. Takefu’s multi-metal bonding also enhances galvanic protection of the edge.

- Easy processing post heat-treatment
Despite being hardened, the outer layers retain softness, allowing easy drilling, grinding, or welding. Cryogenic treatment is recommended for optimal performance.

- Enhanced aesthetics

The Bark River Bushcrafter II is designed to be the ultimate bushcraft knife. The name itself is no accident: careful research has led to an exceptional result that is appreciated by enthusiasts in the field. The blade has an ideal shape for bushcraft activities, while the handle offers excellent ergonomics. Compared to the standard model, the Bushcrafter II is slightly larger, with a blade over an inch longer.

FRANCO VERNAZZA is a hobbyist knifemaker registered with A.C.H.I. (Associazione Coltellinai Hobbisti Italiani) and this creation of his is loosely inspired by Robert "Bob" Loveless' Bad Bob's Knife, his personal knife. Loveless' original was used during his time in Lawndale and is a unique piece of great historical importance. History of the Model
The Model 7 was designed as a scaled-down version of the Model 3 Hunter.

Almost immediately, the idea of a scaled-down version of the new Hunter dawned on Bo Randall as an ideal knife for his fellow anglers. An avid fisherman since his youth, Bo regarded this new knife as a labor of love and immediately set to work on the project. At first he tried 4- and 4.5-inch blades, but then opted for the 4 1/2-inch one. Bo wanted the right handle for cleaning brook trout and similar sized fish, so he reduced the size of the handle of the new Hunter and changed its shape. Naturally, he called this model the "Fisherman," and some early prototypes with 4-inch blades were delivered to some dealers during the latter part of September 1945.

The Kudu Hunter fixed-blade knife offers an excellent balance between form and function: the wide drop point blade is reminiscent of its predecessor model Harpoon, but without the dedicated thumb rest. The handle is extremely comfortable for different types of grips, and its shape does not cause fatigue during long periods of use. These high quality knives, are handcrafted in the tradition of French Thiers cutlery.

This large, perfectly balanced Laguiole hunting knife was made entirely by hand in Laguiole, by a master blacksmith, according to the strict LOG (Laguiole Origine Garantie) quality criteria. Depending on the version, it requires from 109 to 216 working steps.

The blade has a very balanced geometry proven over many decades: it is 11 cm long, 3 cm high and 4 mm thick. Both the bee and the area above the ricasso can be used as a thumb rest.

The blade is ground on both sides to about 22 degrees to the cutting edge (flat grind), so that optimal breaking and scoring is guaranteed and, at the same time, the edge does not round off too quickly. 

The handle scales are polished to a high shine with seven different oils and high quality wax pastes on large felt discs. 

The left handle bears the traditional shepherd's cross (French: croix du berger) as decoration.

Extrema Ratio S-THIL Black Warfare, a special version of the S-THIL model, is a backup knife with a monolithic structure machined from a single piece of 5 mm thick BOHLER N690 steel, developed in collaboration with the designer Thilo Arnd Schiller. The spear point type blade is hardened to 58 HRC in order to obtain the best balance between edge retention and strength, has a false edge in the upper part which enhances the characteristics of penetration and tip work, and is equipped with a Full length furrow flowing elegantly from blade to grip.

The blade is milled integrally with the knife to enhance its compactness and lightness, maintaining a minimum thickness even with a profile that recalls the classic Extrema Ratio handle. This profile forms two small guards and a comfortable thumb rest in order to prevent the hand from slipping towards the blade. On the end there is a skull crusher with a diamond-shaped tip and a slot that allows you to attach a wrist strap to the knife or to equip the handle with paracord winding.

The special Black Warfare version uses the innovative and original Geotech Camo pattern, created by laser engraving. The molded nylon sheath has been designed to be extremely flat and with very small lateral dimensions, in order to make it as compact as possible. The design of the knife makes it ambidextrous, allowing it to be inserted into the sheath with the cutting edge of the blade to the right or left. The double retention system integral with the sheath is made up of four pressure elements that work only two at a time, depending on right/left use, while in the nylon textile part there is a button that allows you to secure the knife to the sheath . The end of the sheath has a hole that allows you to expel liquids or residues inside. The possibility of applying belt clips, ulticlips, malice clips makes it extremely versatile. It is also possible to hook the sheath to the M.O.L.L.E. system. weaving the paracord lanyard.

The S-thil Black Warfare is supplied in an IP67 certified watertight Polypropylene technical case, with pressurization valve, resistant to atmospheric agents, dust and shocks. In fact, as early as 1100 the expert Japanese blacksmiths combined different materials together to give the Katana swords incredible cutting capabilities combined with a resistance and flexibility previously unknown. It is thanks to this revolutionary construction technique that Samurai swords have been preserved to this day, becoming one of the most fascinating objects made by man. Following this tradition applied to modern metallurgy, today we are able to have technologically advanced steels already tested and used in cutlery also by famous brands such as Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, etc.

Characteristics of San Mai steel: These are different types of metals bonded together to create a composite that encloses and intensifies the strengths of the metals individually taken:

- Longer tool life
thanks to the use of very high quality steels with high carbon content (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or sintered (SPG2), in the heart of the sheet (Core Steel), the blade, once hardened, achieves decidedly hardness and cutting performance higher than those achieved with the use of traditional steels.

Laguiole, which can be defined as the "capital" of the Aubrac, is a small town of about 900 inhabitants that became known all over the world for the traditional Laguiole knife.

The Laguiole knife, also known as a knife-corkscrew, loved by the best sommeliers in the world, is said to have evolved from the one used daily by the people of the region since the fourteenth century. It is said that they received it from their parents on the occasion of the First Communion, and used it with love for life as a friend, and as an "amulet".

The Laguiole knife refers to an older model called capuchadou, which the Aubrac breeders used every day since the fourteenth century. The farmers brought it with them, hung on their belts and used it to work wood, or to cut bread and cheese. It is said that, at the end of the working day, they put it on the ground, like a cross, to offer their evening prayer.

The current Laguiole knife, has its prototype in the one designed by Pierre-Jean Calmels, at the beginning of the nineteenth century. At the time, many Catalans lived in this region, used for deforestation or other jobs. They used a clasp knife, a curved blade called a navaja, and Calmels created a beautiful and functional instrument, fusing the traditional navaja and Laguiole knife, heir to the capuchadou. For this new exclusive collaboration with Extrema Ratio we decided to propose a best seller in the world of cutlery, the Shrapnel model. It's a satin blade version but the most important thing is that has been used, for the first time in Italy, the famous Japanese Steel San Mai produced by Takefu Steel. Specifically, we used the CoS (Cobalt Special, considered mechanically superior by 25% compared to the already appreciated VG10) for the central plate and the 420J2 (55 HRC) for the two side plates, in order to have a high cutting capacity, but at the the same time a remarkable resilience and resistance to oxidation.

A First Production Run of 30 pieces has been made.

SHRAPNEL OG is a truly versatile “back up” knife with marked combat qualities. Its leaf-shaped blade is flat ground at a characteristically low angle to a wide, extraordinarily sharp edge. The included hard sheath can be worn vertically, horizontally or obliquely (at a 45° angle). Tthe SHRAPNEL OG hilt design does not include a guard.

Easy drilling and welding after heat treatment
Though the steel gets harder after heat treatment, the soft steel never loses its softness, enabling the material to be drilled or welded.

Design improvement
Laminated patterns or Damascus patterns appear from basis materials which are bonded with different kinds of metals.

Takeshi Saji was born in 1948 in Takefu (Fukui prefecture), a city located roughly in the center of Japan and in the heart of an area for centuries devoted to the production of blades. His lab is still there, built around the oven thanks to which, for several years now, Takeshi Saji forge steel (especially damascus) with which he made various models of traditional Japanese knives. The choice of materials for finishing (mainly natural), the essential lines - evocative use - and the color combinations of rare impact his accomplishments make unique and unmistakable in view of the cutlery world and at home, have earned him the prestigious Master title.

This Pattada constitutes the now historical interpretation of the Sardinian knife made by Consiglio. The handle formed by two halves fixed with a row of rivets and the absence of a real spring are typical of the original model, but the line, the shape of the surfaces, the use of bovine horn are influenced by the Scarperian tradition. Consigli has long linked its business to supplies for Sardinia, so much so that their Pattada have now become "Sardinian by adoption".
