The knife from Rambo: First Blood, the first installment in the series, is one of the most famous examples of a modern survival knife. Designed by master knife maker Jimmy Lile at the specific request of Sylvester Stallone, it was not intended as a simple prop, but as a real, functional and useful tool in an extreme survival context.

In the film, John Rambo is a former Green Beret veteran of Vietnam, an expert in guerrilla warfare and environmental adaptation. The knife becomes a symbol of his self-sufficiency: a sturdy blade, a serrated back for cutting wood and thin metal, a hollow handle with a waterproof seal to hold a small emergency kit (matches, string, hooks), and a flat pommel that can be used as a hammer or mallet. A sharpening stone was also integrated into the sheath, highlighting the philosophy of “don't depend on anything other than what you carry with you.”

The design of the Rambo 1 knife anticipates the myth of the lone hero capable of surviving against nature and man, and defines an aesthetic that would influence the production of survival knives for the entire following decade. Even today, the original Lile models are considered highly collectible items, testimony to the union between cinema and true knife-making artistry.

Kukri - Gurkha Army

Nepal's national weapon and its Gurkha warriors are distinguished by their sharp curved blade in the lathe and the weight shift towards the tip that allows very effective gaiters. The grip is straight, no guard. Characteristic is the ricotta (kauri) and the leather sheath covered with two small knives (karda and chakmak).

The knife from Rambo: First Blood Part II — often called the “Mission” or “Rambo II knife” — is the work of master American knife maker Jimmy Lile.

Created at the request of Sylvester Stallone, the model was designed not as a simple movie prop but as a real survival knife: a long, sturdy blade, partially serrated back, and handle designed for prolonged use and to hold small emergency accessories. 

Lile's design, much more aggressive than the knife in the first film, emphasizes the character's transformation into an even more operational and autonomous figure in the field.

The film, released in 1985 and directed by George P. Cosmatos, helped transform this knife into a popular icon: from a functional tool to a symbol of adventure and resilience.

THE LEGEND
Jimmy Lile (1933–1991), known as “The Arkansas Knifesmith,” was one of the most important American knife makers of the 20th century. Born in Russellville, Arkansas, he made his first knife at the age of 11 and devoted himself professionally to knife making in 1971.

He is famous for the legendary Rambo knives, designed for real use with 440C blades, hollow handles, and innovative details. He was president of the Knifemakers' Guild, and his works were commissioned by presidents and celebrities.

He died in 1991, leaving a legacy of the highest caliber in custom and collectible knives.

THE PRESENT
Today, the Lile Knives, LLC brand is owned by John Hill of McKinney, Texas. In the 1980s, John was already collaborating with Bob Rankin on the sale of original Rambo knives, and in 2003 he co-authored a book dedicated to Lile's work.

After Jimmy's death, John maintained a strong relationship with Marilyn (Lile) Miller and purchased the Lile brand from her to continue producing high-quality replicas of the movie knives, adhering to custom knife standards and guaranteeing Marilyn royalties.

Since 2011, John Hill has been collaborating with Vaughn Neeley, former owner of Timberline Knives, to produce limited editions of Rambo knives that are prized by collectors. Today, Vaughn produces the entire new “Cerakote™ Series,” while the “Utility Series” is produced under his supervision, keeping alive the tradition and quality of Jimmy Lile's original models.

Puma 6356 Original Bowie - A Unique Collector's Knife

The Puma 12 6356 is a remarkable vintage hunting knife known for its sturdiness, quality workmanship and excellent durability. Made in Germany from Pumaster steel, a high-performance alloy steel, this knife offers an ideal combination of hardness, wear resistance, and reliability. Pumaster approaches the performance of modern steels such as D2, with a similar composition that includes good carbon and chromium content. Although it does not reach the hardness of modern ultra-high performance steels, Pumaster is still able to maintain an exceptional edge over the long term, showing superior corrosion resistance compared to pure carbon steels such as 1095 or C75.

With a blade measuring nearly 10 inches long and an overall length of more than 15 inches, the Puma 12 6356 is an imposing knife that does not go unnoticed. Its nickel silver through-guard and rosewood handle give the knife a sophisticated look, while the quality of its craftsmanship ensures durable performance.

2014 knife created through a collaboration between Fox and Hill Knives that commemorates the ISAF (International Security Forces) and ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces) memorial unveiled Sept. 22, 2013, in Kabul, Afghanistan, to honor fallen military personnel during peacekeeping operations in the country. The monument, with inscriptions in English, Pashtu and Dari, is a tribute to the different nationalities involved in the missions. The unveiling ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the Afghan government, security forces and ISAF, underscoring the value of remembrance and the sacrifices made.

This replica of Major Von Tempsky's 11” Bowie knife is inspired by the design of the knife he created and assigned to his company of Forest Rangers in 1863.

Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky (1828-1868) was a German-born adventurer, soldier and artist, known for his role in the New Zealand Wars and for his leadership among the Forest Rangers. His adventurous life and courage made him a legendary figure, particularly in the context of battles between European settlers and Māori peoples.

He learned the advantages of Bowie knife fighting in California during his stint as a prospector, where he had acquired an excellent American-made knife; once he arrived in New Zealand and found himself in charge of Forest Ranger Company No. 2 with the rank of major, he had about 30 Bowie knives made for his men according to his personal design by a blacksmith in Shortland St. Auckland. The Forest Rangers were an elite corps of mounted scouts employed by the colonial government between August 1863 and October 1867 during the New Zealand Wars.

At the time, knives were made of wagon spring steel, one of the few steels available to blacksmiths in Auckland in 1863, and Von Tempsky, an experienced fighter, taught his men the use of the Bowie knife in hand-to-hand combat. The knife was used to defend against enemy blows while a pistol was usually held in the other hand.

In addition to combat, Bowie knives were used to open paths in the forest, dig defensive positions, cut firewood, and for general use while camping.

The Halfbreed Blades HBBLBK01OD is a high-end tactical knife designed to withstand the most extreme conditions. Built with a solid full-tang blade made of Böhler K110 steel, it provides excellent wear resistance and outstanding cutting performance. The 146 mm blade is coated with OD Green Teflon (PTFE), reducing friction and protecting the steel from corrosion.

Japanese steel meets Italian excellence

For this 2021 collaboration between Coltelleria Collini of Busto Arsizio and Fox Knives of Maniago, we decided to offer the 609OD Bushman, an outstanding bushcraft knife produced by Fox Knives of Maniago, using high-performance Japanese V-Toku2 Sanmai steel (5mm) from Takefu Steel instead of the D2 steel used in the standard model.

Specifically, we used high-carbon V-Toku2 at 62/63HRC for the central core and stainless SUS410 for the outer layers, ensuring exceptional cutting ability, penetration, and edge retention. At the same time, the blade offers high corrosion resistance and increased toughness due to the laminated structure and external stainless steel.

The laminated steel—imported into Italy by Collini Steel directly from Takefu Steel in Japan—follows the ancient Japanese tradition of crafting legendary Samurai swords. As early as the 1100s, Japanese blacksmiths combined different materials to create Katana swords with incredible cutting power, strength, and flexibility, unmatched at the time. This revolutionary forging technique has allowed Samurai swords to survive to this day as some of the most fascinating objects ever created.

By applying this tradition to modern metallurgy, we now have technologically advanced steels that have been tested and widely used in knife-making by renowned brands such as Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, and more.

San Mai Steel Features: This consists of different types of metals fused together to create a composite steel that enhances and intensifies the individual strengths of each material:

• Longer-lasting cutting edge: High-performance, high-carbon core steels (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or sintered steels (SPG2) provide exceptional hardness and cutting performance after heat treatment.

Gabriele Sammatrice/Sicilian Forge Custom Knives is a skilled craftsman who offers blades with character, strength and cutting edges of the highest level. He often uses A8 Modified tool steel: a very strong alloy steel. The most common use of this alloy is in striking blades. It has extreme toughness with good edge retention. The 8.5% chromium makes it almost stainless.

A8-mod is a modified version of AISI A8. It is a tool steel with a medium carbon content and alloyed with chromium, molybdenum and vanadium. This steel is an improvement on A8 steel, with good hardenability, toughness and dimensional stability to heat treatment.

The Bark River Aurora II is designed as the ultimate bushcraft knife, a result of extensive testing conducted by experts in North America and Europe. This outdoor knife, perfected through feedback received, is notable for its balance and versatility. Designed specifically for the seven Mercury Program astronauts, the Model 17 accompanied these pioneers on the United States' first manned space flights. The Harsey TT (Tactical Trout) is designed to be a very comfortable and sturdy medium-sized knife for most field tasks and defensive use. The size of the TT makes it easy to carry and handle.

The blade profile provides a clean cut with excellent tip strength. The full tang and handle of the Harsey TT provide neutral balance in the user's hand. The ergonomically shaped, linen Micarta handle provides a comfortable and secure grip when dry or wet. The pommel has a lanyard hole in the center of the angled tip. The TT is an excellent universal fixed blade, well balanced in size, function and feel. In our opinion, one of William Harsey's best designs.

After more than 40 years of service in the U.S. Army Special Forces, Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey founded Spartan Blades LLC in North Carolina. Knife handcrafted by Master C.IC. (Corporazione Italiana Coltellinai - Italian Knife-makers Guild) Livio Montagna. Reproduction of one of the various versions of the Arkansas Toothpick, legendary frontier knife of the American 1800s. Famous, often infamous, it generally has a 30 to 50 cm blade, rather narrow and sometimes symmetrical, dagger-style. Used mainly for hunting and personal defence.

Livio Montagna's version is aesthetically very similar to the Toothpick used in Expandables 2.

Japanese steel blends with Italian excellence

For this 2021 collaboration, between the Collini Cutlery of Busto Arsizio and the Fox of Maniago, we have decided to propose the 609OD Bushman model, an excellent bushcraft knife produced by Fox of Maniago, using Japanese V-Toku2 steel in Sanmai. produced by Japanese Takefu Steel instead of the D2 used in the production model.

Specifically, we used V-Toku2 carbonaceous at 62 / 63HRC for the central plate and SUS410 stainless steel for the two external plates, in order to guarantee a very high cutting capacity, penetration and sealing of the wire together with an ease of re-sharpening. and maintenance but at the same time the blade has a remarkable resistance to corrosion and an important increase in resilience given by the type of external steel and by the laminated structure.

As in the ancient Japanese Samurai swords.

The rolled steel - imported into Italy by Collini Steel directly from the Japanese Takefu Steel - is based on the ancient Japanese tradition in the creation of the famous Samurai swords. In fact, as early as 1100 the expert Japanese blacksmiths combined different materials together to give the Katana swords incredible cutting capabilities combined with a resistance and flexibility previously unknown. It is thanks to this revolutionary construction technique that Samurai swords have been preserved to this day, becoming one of the most fascinating objects made by man. Following this tradition applied to modern metallurgy, today we are able to have technologically advanced steels already tested and used in cutlery also by famous brands such as Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, etc.

Characteristics of San Mai steel: These are different types of metals bonded together to create a composite that encloses and intensifies the strengths of the metals individually taken:

- Longer life of the cutting edge
thanks to the use of very high quality steels with high carbon content (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or sintered (SPG2), in the heart of the sheet (Core Steel), the blade, once hardened, achieves decidedly hardness and cutting performance higher than those achieved with the use of traditional steels.

- Greater resilience
built with the principle of Japanese swords, multilayer steel is difficult to break thanks to the toughness of the central steel (Core Steel) and the elasticity of the steel used for the side facing (Stainless Steel).

- Better corrosion resistance
the steel used for the external layers (Stainless Steel) guarantees the blade a high resistance to corrosion. The combination of the two or more materials used by Takefu Steel generates, at the galvanic level, a structure that improves the corrosion resistance even on the wire.

- Easy processing even after heat treatment
although steel normally becomes harder after hardening, the lateral steel used in multilayer processing does not lose its softness and allows easy processing, drilling or welding even after heat treatment. For an optimal performance of the blade, cryogenic treatment is recommended.

- Improvement of the aesthetic result
The knives made with multi-state steel or damascus pattern at the end of the processing are aesthetically elegant, refined and highly appreciated by collectors all over the world.
