Kevin Smock is an award-winning industrial designer who is making waves with his visionary handcrafted custom knives. Based on his SK23, the Spyderco Smock translates his innovative style into a high-quality production knife.

The Smock's most unique feature, however, is the push-button release of its high-strength Compression Lock mechanism, which allows the knife to close securely and easily without getting your fingers near the edge of the blade. Subtle, innovative and distinctly different, the Smock reflects Kevin Smock's unique approach to knife making.

    Notes on the Designer

Michael Walker is to the knife industry what Michael Jordan is to basketball or Wayne Gretzky is to hockey. He shattered established standards, venturing into uncharted territory and elevating the art of knife-making to new heights of innovation and modernity.

In 1980, the folding knife industry had few locking innovations, and only the traditional Back Lock existed. In 1981, Walker invented, developed, and ultimately trademarked the Michael Walker LinerLock®, adding a leaf spring that locked the blade open, making it a true one-handed folding knife. He also included a latch to keep the blade closed by utilizing the force of the internal leaf spring, preventing it from opening in the user’s pocket.

This innovation paved the way for modern cutlery, enabling numerous new designs and future developments leading up to today’s SubFrame Lock, Frame Lock, Flipper Folder, and ball-bearing-equipped IKBS opening systems.

Other inventions include the “Lake and Walker Safety System” (LAWKS), BLADELock, Ball Bearing Lock, and Tough Lock.

Some of the manufacturers he has collaborated with include Spyderco, Columbia River Knife and Tool, Schrade, Böker, and Klotzli.

Walker’s knives and designs have inspired many other custom knife makers, notably Bob Terzuola and Ernest Emerson. Terzuola credits Walker with teaching him how to make a liner-lock folder, and Emerson has stated that seeing one of Walker’s knives at a gun show inspired him to become a knifemaker.

Walker’s knives can be found at the Artifex Gallery in Taos and in the most prestigious collections around the world.

The C70 A.T.R. (At The Ready) embodies the essence of a high-performance tactical folder. Awarded “Knife of the Year 2003” by Knives Illustrated, this model showcases the most advanced technological solutions developed by Spyderco.

The handle, precision-machined from a block of satin-finished stainless steel, is lightened by a series of holes that reduce weight and serve as tactile reference points for quick grip changes. The same holes are replicated on the contoured clip, ensuring balance and consistency in indexing.

The ends of the handle widen into a generous finger choil and a pinky rest, ensuring a stable grip in all conditions. The Compression Lock, fully integrated into the titanium scale, offers maximum strength and is rated for heavy-duty use and MBC applications.

The VG-10 blade, hollow-ground sharp, features a non-sharp swedge and a profile that combines a solid point with excellent penetration and cutting ability. Above the classic Spyderco hole is the Cobra Hood, which naturally guides the thumb during quick opening and acts as a control platform when the knife is in use.

The clip is configurable for both right and left tip-up carry thanks to the pre-drilled holes.

    THE LEGEND
Jimmy Lile (1933–1991), known as “The Arkansas Knifesmith,” was one of the most important American knife makers of the 20th century. Born in Russellville, Arkansas, he made his first knife at the age of 11 and devoted himself professionally to knife making in 1971.

He is famous for the legendary Rambo knives, designed for real use with 440C blades, hollow handles, and innovative details. He was president of the Knifemakers' Guild, and his works were commissioned by presidents and celebrities.

He died in 1991, leaving a legacy of the highest caliber in custom and collectible knives.

    THE PRESENT
Today, the Lile Knives, LLC brand is owned by John Hill of McKinney, Texas. In the 1980s, John was already collaborating with Bob Rankin on the sale of original Rambo knives, and in 2003 he co-authored a book dedicated to Lile's work.

After Jimmy's death, John maintained a strong relationship with Marilyn (Lile) Miller and purchased the Lile brand from her to continue producing high-quality replicas of the movie knives, adhering to custom knife standards and guaranteeing Marilyn royalties.

Since 2011, John Hill has been collaborating with Vaughn Neeley, former owner of Timberline Knives, to produce limited editions of Rambo knives that are prized by collectors. Today, Vaughn produces the entire new “Cerakote™ Series,” while the “Utility Series” is produced under his supervision, keeping alive the tradition and quality of Jimmy Lile's original models.

    THE KNIFE
“The Mission” is one of the most iconic survival knives ever made, born from Jimmy Lile's vision to combine extreme functionality and military design.

Featuring a stainless steel blade finished entirely with bead-blasting to eliminate reflections, this model combines tactical aesthetics and real performance.

The back is equipped with aggressive serrations, while the hollow handle, wrapped in paracord, integrates a compass and allows for the transport of small tools.

The multifunction guard features screwdriver tips, making it a complete survival tool. Produced in a limited edition, “The Mission” represents the perfect synthesis between a combat knife, field tool, and collector's item.

In the 1980s, Jimmy Lile developed an elegant folding knife with a button lock mechanism, known as the “Lile Lock.” This patented system consists of a front button on the handle that unlocks the blade when opening and locks it in the cutting position, ensuring safety and ease of use. The monolithic nickel-silver guides support the D2 steel blade, while the micarta inserts on the scales give the knife a refined look.

This is a generously sized knife, produced in limited quantities between the 1970s and 1980s. The numbered examples bearing engravings such as the patent number 4148140 are now highly sought-after collector's items of great economic value.

This folding model represents a perfect balance between functionality and collectible design: compact and easy to handle, with a reliable lock, high-quality materials, and meticulous details, embodying Lile's attention to craftsmanship even in a context other than the famous survival knife.

A pollywog represents metamorphosis in the animal kingdom, adapting and changing its form to survive in its environment. The same principle applies here. The Spyderco Poliwog CLIPIT® thrives in a small-knife-friendly environment while keeping the features necessary to excel in a harsh, heavy cutting and performance setting. Its distinctive opened-ended Ball Bearing Lock™ exposes the knife's inner workings for easy cleaning and rates as one of Spyderco's highest strength locking mechanisms. Pulling back on the ball unlocks the blade ambidextrously from either side of the knife.

The hand settles on the curved handle positioning the index finger into a choil that optimizes control and generates less fatigue and pressure on the hand during cutting. Made from VG-10, the blade has a hollow-ground edge with a weight reducing swedge-grind extending mid-spine to the tip. It is available in PlainEdge. Its ambidextrous wire-tension pocket clip sets the Poliwog tip-up in the pocket.
