Japanese steel meets Italian excellence

For this 2021 collaboration between Coltelleria Collini of Busto Arsizio and Fox Knives of Maniago, we decided to offer the 609OD Bushman, an outstanding bushcraft knife produced by Fox Knives of Maniago, using high-performance Japanese V-Toku2 Sanmai steel (5mm) from Takefu Steel instead of the D2 steel used in the standard model.

Specifically, we used high-carbon V-Toku2 at 62/63HRC for the central core and stainless SUS410 for the outer layers, ensuring exceptional cutting ability, penetration, and edge retention. At the same time, the blade offers high corrosion resistance and increased toughness due to the laminated structure and external stainless steel.

The laminated steel—imported into Italy by Collini Steel directly from Takefu Steel in Japan—follows the ancient Japanese tradition of crafting legendary Samurai swords. As early as the 1100s, Japanese blacksmiths combined different materials to create Katana swords with incredible cutting power, strength, and flexibility, unmatched at the time. This revolutionary forging technique has allowed Samurai swords to survive to this day as some of the most fascinating objects ever created.

By applying this tradition to modern metallurgy, we now have technologically advanced steels that have been tested and widely used in knife-making by renowned brands such as Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, and more.

San Mai Steel Features: This consists of different types of metals fused together to create a composite steel that enhances and intensifies the individual strengths of each material:

• Longer-lasting cutting edge: High-performance, high-carbon core steels (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or sintered steels (SPG2) provide exceptional hardness and cutting performance after heat treatment.
• Increased toughness: Inspired by Japanese sword-making, the multi-layered steel is highly resistant to breakage due to the toughness of the core steel and the flexibility of the outer stainless steel layers.
• Improved corrosion resistance: The outer stainless steel layers provide high corrosion resistance. The galvanic combination of Takefu Steel’s materials further enhances resistance along the edge.
• Ease of reworking after heat treatment: Unlike standard steels, the outer layers retain some softness even after hardening, allowing for easier processing, drilling, and welding.
• Enhanced aesthetics: Multi-layered or Damascus-patterned knives are visually striking, elegant, and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

The Harsey TT (Tactical Trout) is designed to be a very comfortable and sturdy medium-sized knife for most field tasks and defensive use. The size of the TT makes it easy to carry and handle.

The blade profile provides a clean cut with excellent tip strength. The full tang and handle of the Harsey TT provide neutral balance in the user's hand. The ergonomically shaped, linen Micarta handle provides a comfortable and secure grip when dry or wet. The pommel has a lanyard hole in the center of the angled tip. The TT is an excellent universal fixed blade, well balanced in size, function and feel. In our opinion, one of William Harsey's best designs.

After more than 40 years of service in the U.S. Army Special Forces, Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey founded Spartan Blades LLC in North Carolina. In fact, as early as 1100 the expert Japanese blacksmiths combined different materials together to give the Katana swords incredible cutting capabilities combined with a resistance and flexibility previously unknown. It is thanks to this revolutionary construction technique that Samurai swords have been preserved to this day, becoming one of the most fascinating objects made by man. Following this tradition applied to modern metallurgy, today we are able to have technologically advanced steels already tested and used in cutlery also by famous brands such as Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, etc.

Characteristics of San Mai steel: These are different types of metals bonded together to create a composite that encloses and intensifies the strengths of the metals individually taken:

- Longer life of the cutting edge
thanks to the use of very high quality steels with high carbon content (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or sintered (SPG2), in the heart of the sheet (Core Steel), the blade, once hardened, achieves decidedly hardness and cutting performance higher than those achieved with the use of traditional steels.

- Greater resilience
built with the principle of Japanese swords, multilayer steel is difficult to break thanks to the toughness of the central steel (Core Steel) and the elasticity of the steel used for the side facing (Stainless Steel).

- Better corrosion resistance
the steel used for the external layers (Stainless Steel) guarantees the blade a high resistance to corrosion. The combination of the two or more materials used by Takefu Steel generates, at the galvanic level, a structure that improves the corrosion resistance even on the wire.

- Easy processing even after heat treatment
although steel normally becomes harder after hardening, the lateral steel used in multilayer processing does not lose its softness and allows easy processing, drilling or welding even after heat treatment. For an optimal performance of the blade, cryogenic treatment is recommended.

- Improvement of the aesthetic result
The knives made with multi-state steel or damascus pattern at the end of the processing are aesthetically elegant, refined and highly appreciated by collectors all over the world.
