Here-I grew up in an area where coyotes yelp and howl at night. Their call is a bit eerie, perhaps frightening, but they are like those barking puppies: much ado about nothing. Designed specifically for the seven Mercury Program astronauts, the Model 17 accompanied these pioneers on the United States' first manned space flights. Astronaut Gordon Cooper contributed to the final design of this knife, making it not only a survival tool, but also a piece of history. Two examples of this knife, rich in historical value, are currently on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
