Notes on the Designer

Michael Walker is to the knife industry what Michael Jordan is to basketball or Wayne Gretzky is to hockey. He shattered established standards, venturing into uncharted territory and elevating the art of knife-making to new heights of innovation and modernity.

In 1980, the folding knife industry had few locking innovations, and only the traditional Back Lock existed. In 1981, Walker invented, developed, and ultimately trademarked the Michael Walker LinerLock®, adding a leaf spring that locked the blade open, making it a true one-handed folding knife. He also included a latch to keep the blade closed by utilizing the force of the internal leaf spring, preventing it from opening in the user’s pocket.

This innovation paved the way for modern cutlery, enabling numerous new designs and future developments leading up to today’s SubFrame Lock, Frame Lock, Flipper Folder, and ball-bearing-equipped IKBS opening systems.

Other inventions include the “Lake and Walker Safety System” (LAWKS), BLADELock, Ball Bearing Lock, and Tough Lock.

Some of the manufacturers he has collaborated with include Spyderco, Columbia River Knife and Tool, Schrade, Böker, and Klotzli.

Walker’s knives and designs have inspired many other custom knife makers, notably Bob Terzuola and Ernest Emerson. Terzuola credits Walker with teaching him how to make a liner-lock folder, and Emerson has stated that seeing one of Walker’s knives at a gun show inspired him to become a knifemaker.

Walker’s knives can be found at the Artifex Gallery in Taos and in the most prestigious collections around the world.

Higo is one of the most beloved models for Rockstead Knives fans around the world, and HIGOⅡX, with a custom Dark Matter Gold (DMG) carbon fiber coating and a titanium back layer, is one more step in the pursuit of perfection. The Zero Tolerance 0500 model, also known as MUDD, was designed by Grant and Gavin Hawk. This knife is resistant to sand, dirt, and water thanks to the neoprene seals around the pivot and the lock.

The blade is coated in Tungsten DLC, approximately 9.2 cm long, and made of 154CM steel.

The handle is made of aluminum with textured G-10 grips, providing a solid grip.

This model was manufactured roughly between 2007 and 2009, and although the exact number of pieces produced is not known, estimates suggest a low quantity, probably between 1000 and 2500 units.

As a Filipino martial arts enthusiast, Italian knife designer Alessandra De Santis of Hydra Design decided to design a Karambit knife for Boker Plus. These sickle-shaped knives originated in Southeast Asia and were preferably used for harvesting rice. In contrast, the Karambit from Boker Plus comes in a tactical guise. The 154CM Hawkbill blade effortlessly slices its way through cardboard and ropes, while the G10 handle and sturdy linerlock provide the necessary safety on the job.

Light weight and high efficiency form the backbone of the pocket knife named after the Norse goddess of the underworld. As an alternative to the flipper opening, the knife offers a thumb stud screwed into the back of the blade whose shape also serves as an "Emerson Wave"-style opening. Alessandra De Santis' characteristic angular design elements are found in the G10 ring at the end of the handle. The flush, reversible clip allows for flexible knife carrying. Designer Notes

Michael Walker is to the knife industry what Michael Jordan is to basketball or Wayne Gretsky is to field hockey. He shattered established standards, jumping into uncharted territory and elevating the art of cutlery to greater heights of innovation and modernity.

In 1980, the folding knife industry had few locking innovations and only the traditional Back Lock existed. In 1981 Walker invented, developed and eventually trademarked the Michael Walker LinerLock® adding a leaf spring that locked the blade open, making it a true one-handed openable folding knife. He also included a latch to hold the blade closed using the force of the inner folder spring so it wouldn't open in a pocket to the user.

This innovation of his opened the door to modern cutlery, allowing for multiple new designs and future developments up to today's SubFrame Lock, Frame Lock, Flipper Folder and IKBS ball bearing opening systems.

Other inventions include the "Lake and Walker Safety System" or LAWKS, BLADELock, Ball bearing lock, and Tough Lock.

Some of the manufacturing companies he has worked with include Spyderco, Columbia River Knife and Tool, Schrade, Böker, and Klotzli.

Walker's knives and designs have inspired many other custom knife makers, most notably Bob Terzuola and Ernest Emerson. Terzuola credits Walker with teaching him how to make a linerlock folder and Emerson said that seeing a Walker knife at a gun show gave him the inspiration to become a knifemaker.

Walker's knives can be found at the Artifex Gallery in Taos and in most prestigious collections around the world.

With the Rockstead brand of Ishida Co. of Sakai, Japan, the best industrial knives currently in production are currently marketed.

Created by Katsumi Kitano, who for over 20 years has been producing quality knives so as to have been awarded the highest recognition among artisan knives in Japan, they are exceptional both in cutting capacity, penetration and hold of the thread and in innovation for the materials used and for construction techniques.
