Japanese steel meets Italian excellence

For this 2020 collaboration, exclusively for Coltelleria Collini, we decided to offer a series of best sellers produced by Extrema Ratio. These knives are made using the renowned San Mai steel produced by Japan’s Takefu Steel. Specifically, we used carbon-rich V-Toku2 at 62/63HRC for the central core and stainless SUS410 for the outer layers, resulting in superior cutting performance, penetration, edge retention, ease of sharpening, and at the same time excellent corrosion resistance and increased resilience due to the laminated structure.

Model Col Moschin Compact: this First Production Run was limited to 15 numbered units, from 1 to 15.

The lethal efficiency of the COL MOSCHIN knife, now in compact version. Comes with a rigid belt sheath and BELT-CLIP. The sheath can be mounted horizontally, vertically, or at a 45° angle.

The laminated steel – imported into Italy by Collini Steel directly from Japan’s Takefu Steel – is based on the age-old Japanese sword-making tradition. As early as the 1100s, Japanese blacksmiths were combining different metals to craft Katana swords with extraordinary cutting power, resistance, and flexibility. This revolutionary technique allowed Samurai swords to survive through centuries and become among the most fascinating human-made artifacts. Applied to modern metallurgy, this tradition now yields advanced steels already used in knife-making by brands like Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Mcusta, Kai, Sog, Zwilling, Rockstead, etc.

San Mai Steel Features: A combination of different metals bonded together to create a composite with amplified properties:

- Greater edge retention
Thanks to high-carbon premium steels (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or powder steels (SPG2) in the core, once hardened, the blade achieves cutting performance far superior to traditional steels.

- Higher resilience
Based on Japanese sword construction, the multi-layer steel is highly resistant to breaking due to the toughness of the core and flexibility of the stainless cladding.

The Silent Hero was designed by Anton Du Plessis, then Head of Operations for the Silent Heroes Foundation Special Interdiction Unit, whose mission was to fight poaching in South Africa. 2014 knife created through a collaboration between Fox and Hill Knives that commemorates the ISAF (International Security Forces) and ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces) memorial unveiled Sept. 22, 2013, in Kabul, Afghanistan, to honor fallen military personnel during peacekeeping operations in the country. The monument, with inscriptions in English, Pashtu and Dari, is a tribute to the different nationalities involved in the missions. The unveiling ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the Afghan government, security forces and ISAF, underscoring the value of remembrance and the sacrifices made.

Citadel Knives and Swords is a sword and knife manufacturer based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Despite the country's reputation as an exotic and remote location, the company is easily accessible, located close to the city's international airport. The workshop is modest but houses an impressive range of high-quality Japanese swords and knives.

Founded by Dominique Eluere in the 1990s, Citadel has combined the expertise of French and local craftsmen to produce blades that rival the best in the world. Eluere began by training Cambodian blacksmiths to make French table knives, later evolving into the production of Japanese swords.

The quality of Citadel swords is world renowned, thanks to the use of traditional Japanese techniques and a meticulous manufacturing process. Each katana is heat treated, creating a blade with varying hardness along the edge and spine, a hallmark of true katanas. The hilt is fully encased in high-quality stingray leather, a rarity compared to common panels.

Attention to detail extends to every element, with every component custom-made for each blade. This includes the tsuba (sword guard) and habaki (blade collar), both of which are hand-crafted and fitted, ensuring perfect fit and functionality.

In addition to katanas, Citadel also produces European swords and knives, maintaining the same philosophy of quality and functionality. Production is artisanal, with particular attention to polishing and finishing, often done by hand with sandpaper and whetstones.

Citadel is proud of its Cambodian roots, with local workers looking up to Eluere as a father figure and deeply involved in maintaining the company's high standards.

The HIGO-MH-DLC folder features a 3.5-inch YXR7 blade with DLC coating and Micarta handle. The incredible mirror finish is achieved by heat treating the blade and gradually grinding by hand with wet and dry sandpaper of 400, 600, 800, 1,200 and 2,000. The design of this legendary knife was born out of the meeting of a former soldier and bodyguard to President Roosevelt, Rex Applegate, and William Ewart Fairbairn, who, together with Edward Anthony Sykes, had given birth to the progenitor of modern military fighters: the Fairbairn-Sykes that accompanied the British Commandos during World War II. In defining the forms of the new knife, the two started from the very limitations that had emerged from the wartime use of the Fairbairn-Sykes, particularly fragility, limited utility in cutting use, and the tendency of the round-section handle to rotate in the hand.

Knife handcrafted by Master C.IC. (Corporazione Italiana Coltellinai - Italian Knife-makers Guild) Livio Montagna. Reproduction of one of the various versions of the Arkansas Toothpick, legendary frontier knife of the American 1800s. Famous, often infamous, it generally has a 30 to 50 cm blade, rather narrow and sometimes symmetrical, dagger-style. Used mainly for hunting and personal defence.

Livio Montagna's version is aesthetically very similar to the Toothpick used in Expandables 2.

The knife is distinguished by an excellent overall balance, allowing control and precision in use. The finish is of a good standard.

History of the Model
The Model 7 was designed as a scaled-down version of the Model 3 Hunter.

Almost immediately, the idea of a scaled-down version of the new Hunter dawned on Bo Randall as an ideal knife for his fellow anglers. An avid fisherman since his youth, Bo regarded this new knife as a labor of love and immediately set to work on the project. At first he tried 4- and 4.5-inch blades, but then opted for the 4 1/2-inch one. Bo wanted the right handle for cleaning brook trout and similar sized fish, so he reduced the size of the handle of the new Hunter and changed its shape. Naturally, he called this model the "Fisherman," and some early prototypes with 4-inch blades were delivered to some dealers during the latter part of September 1945.

While we've seen plenty of Boker products over the years, resourceful knife makers continue to find ways to surprise us. For example, Brad Zinker from Florida with his Urban Trapper, one of the thinnest profile titanium framelocks we've ever experienced. With just 8mm grip thickness (without clip), the term "slim" only inadequately describes the Urban Trapper for its usable size.

The large holes and titanium transform the Urban Trapper into a real featherweight of just 48 g that can be carried extremely comfortably both in a suit pocket and in light summer trousers. Considering the overall minimalist design of the knife, the size of the flipper is equally reserved.

When used, it still impresses with its outstanding functionality and reliably opens the blade on VG-10 ball bearings. The blade shape of this classic trapper pocket knife, widely distributed in the United States and worn for many years by Brad Zinker, was the inspiration for this unusual piece.

The UC1168 Kempo II knife, introduced in 1998 and later replaced by the Alaskan knife in 2003, features a Kenpo Karate emblem on the handle.
