Laguiole knives, originating from the village of Laguiole in France, date back to the 19th century. First created by Pierre-Jean Calmels in 1829, the knives were used by local shepherds and farmers. FRANCO VERNAZZA is a hobbyist knifemaker registered with A.C.H.I. (Associazione Coltellinai Hobbisti Italiani) and this creation of his is loosely inspired by Robert "Bob" Loveless' Bad Bob's Knife, his personal knife. Loveless' original was used during his time in Lawndale and is a unique piece of great historical importance. For that very reason it is so famous and published in tittie texts devoted to vintage custom cutlery.

In some areas of central and southern Italy, it was customary to give knives as engagement or wedding gifts, assigning the knife the task of sanctioning the love bond.

There was a strong identification between man and knife: the lover who gave such a gift to the woman symbolically offered himself, while the gift given to the man could be interpreted as an exhortation to virile valor.

Some specimens of this historical knife also served as protection against the evil eye, featuring the characteristic “dice eyes” on the handle, while the blades were traditionally engraved with decorative and symbolic elements.

The love knives were also indicative of the social class of the family: less wealthy couples, unable to afford very elaborate knives, sanctioned their love with simpler, less worked, and less expensive objects, but identical in values and meanings.

The brand Artigiano Scarperia was established in 2007 by two expert knife makers, Fabio Gasparrini and Alessandro Conti. Drawing inspiration from ancient art, they create refined cutlery for the kitchen and table, assortments of personal care items and office supplies, as well as various objects in horn and wood. All products are handcrafted, using traditional techniques without the use of machinery.

For this reason, any variations in material and workmanship are not considered flaws, but distinctive features of a unique product, handcrafted and of high quality.

Knife withdrawn from private collection presumably dating back to the first half of the 1980s - overall in good condition - knife still has factory sharpening, but now ineffective - has a couple of small scratches on the blade and a few small marks on the guard - comes with Randall handcrafted leather sheath in excellent condition - Checked and certified by our in-house lab. 

Randall's Model 11 was designed in 1952 by Tommy Thompson, noted Alaskan guide. An otima blade for skinning big game, it features a serrated top of the blade to facilitate thumb placement and prevent thumb slippage.
