Spyderco Native® 5 Lightweight Maxamet® combines the ergonomics and proven design of the Native 5 Lightweight model with Carpenter®'s advanced Micro-Melt® Maxamet® steel.

Maxamet is an extremely hard steel that outperforms traditional high-speed steels, approaching ultra-hard materials such as cemented carbides. Only a few companies, including Spyderco, have developed the techniques necessary to work, temper, and sharpen it, resulting in reliable, high-performance blades.

The full-flat-ground PlainEdge™ blade maximizes the qualities of Maxamet, offering strength, smoothness, excellent edge retention, and precision in the tip. The lightweight gray FRN handle with Bi-Directional Texturing™ ensures a secure grip, while the back lock mechanism and Round Hole™ make opening and use completely ambidextrous. All this is complemented by a four-position clip for versatile carrying.

1990s vintage gentleman's knife, produced in Japan by the historic company G. SAKAI, with a long tradition in knife-making. Founded in 1958 as "Sakai Hamono", it has its roots in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, a region famous in Japan for producing knives and swords for over 700 years.

Quality and innovation: The company was known for combining Japanese craftsmanship with advanced technologies. It produced a wide range of knives, from hunting and bushcraft knives to kitchen knives, and was internationally recognized for its high overall quality and excellent sharpening.

G. Sakai collaborated with many knife brands worldwide and also produced licensed knives for other companies.

Designer Notes

Michael Walker is to the knife industry what Michael Jordan is to basketball or Wayne Gretsky is to field hockey. He shattered established standards, jumping into uncharted territory and elevating the art of cutlery to greater heights of innovation and modernity.

In 1980, the folding knife industry had few locking innovations and only the traditional Back Lock existed. In 1981 Walker invented, developed and eventually trademarked the Michael Walker LinerLock® adding a leaf spring that locked the blade open, making it a true one-handed openable folding knife. He also included a latch to hold the blade closed using the force of the inner folder spring so it wouldn't open in a pocket to the user.

This innovation of his opened the door to modern cutlery, allowing for multiple new designs and future developments up to today's SubFrame Lock, Frame Lock, Flipper Folder and IKBS ball bearing opening systems.

Other inventions include the "Lake and Walker Safety System" or LAWKS, BLADELock, Ball bearing lock, and Tough Lock.

Some of the manufacturing companies he has worked with include Spyderco, Columbia River Knife and Tool, Schrade, Böker, and Klotzli.

Walker's knives and designs have inspired many other custom knife makers, most notably Bob Terzuola and Ernest Emerson. Terzuola credits Walker with teaching him how to make a linerlock folder and Emerson said that seeing a Walker knife at a gun show gave him the inspiration to become a knifemaker.

Walker's knives can be found at the Artifex Gallery in Taos and in most prestigious collections around the world.
