Antonini knives - Old Bear knife in SanMai VG10 a 67 layers - 23cm - multilayer black - Limited Edition
Antonini artisans from Maniago have created an exclusive and limited series of OLD BEAR knives using the famous Japanese SANMAI steel in VG10 with 67 layers. This beautiful project combines the tradition of a successful knife, patented and built in Italy, with the history and qualitative excellence of Japanese steel, made with a production process that dates back to that used for the famous Japanese swords.
The thickness of the blade goes from 2 mm of the standard models to 2.5 mm of this exclusive series, in order to make the knife more robust and performing.
To make the knife even more exclusive, for each of the three sizes offered, 60 exclusive pieces have been created, with progressive numbering engraved on the blade
Type of production: semi-artisanal
Production Lama: Italy
Blade: San Mai 67 VG10 damask stainless steel (60/61 HRC)
Handle: in plywood with satin brass ring with nickel plating
Blade length: 100mm.
Blade thickness: 2.5mm.
Closed length: 127mm.
Thick when closed: 22mm.
Total length: 225mm.
Weight: 68g.
Closure: viro blockThe handles are made of Italian olive wood. Being a model without return spring, the fixing of the blade to the handle is ensured by a solid safety ring in nickel plated brass equipped with a special locking device (covered by patent n. active partner of this project) which can be activated both in the open and in the closed position.
As early as 1100, expert Japanese blacksmiths combined different materials together to give Katana swords cutting, strength and flexibility previously unknown. Inspired by this tradition, Berkel has created a series of Japanese SanMai steel knives.
The blade consists of a core layer of extremely hard VG-10 steel, which keeps it sharp for a long time, and two outer plates made of 33-layer damask stainless steel per side, for greater resistance to corrosion and torsion.
Characteristics of SanMai steel: These are different types of metals bonded together to create a composite that encloses and intensifies the strengths of the metals individually taken:
- Longer life of the cutting edge
thanks to the use of very high quality steels with high carbon content (VG10, CoS, Shiro) or sintered (SPG2), in the heart of the sheet (Core Steel), the blade, once hardened, achieves decidedly hardness and cutting performance higher than those achieved with the use of traditional steels.- Greater resilience
built with the principle of Japanese swords, multilayer steel is difficult to break thanks to the toughness of the central steel (Core Steel) and the elasticity of the steel used for the side facing (Stainless Steel).- Better corrosion resistance
the steel used for the external layers (Stainless Steel) guarantees the blade a high resistance to corrosion. The combination of the two or more materials used by Takefu Steel generates, at the galvanic level, a structure that improves the corrosion resistance even on the wire.- Easy processing even after heat treatment
although steel normally becomes harder after hardening, the lateral steel used in multilayer processing does not lose its softness and allows easy processing, drilling or welding even after heat treatment. For an optimal performance of the blade, cryogenic treatment is recommended.- Improvement of the aesthetic result
The knives made with multi-state steel or damascus pattern at the end of the processing are aesthetically elegant, refined and highly appreciated by collectors all over the world. For more information: Collini Steel

Coltelli - Numero 62 - Febbraio/Marzo 2014 - rivista
Rivista a colori Bimestrale prodotta e distribuita in Italia specializzata in coltelli di tutti i tipi (collezione, artigianali, militari, sportivi, multiuso…). 82 Pagine

Coltelli - Numero 58 - Giugno/Luglio 2013 - rivista
Rivista a colori Bimestrale prodotta e distribuita in Italia specializzata in coltelli di tutti i tipi (collezione, artigianali, militari, sportivi, multiuso…). 96 Pagine
Coltelli - Numero 57 - Aprile/Maggio 2013 - rivista
Rivista a colori Bimestrale prodotta e distribuita in Italia specializzata in coltelli di tutti i tipi (collezione, artigianali, militari, sportivi, multiuso…). 96 Pagine
Per quanto riguarda gli eventi, vi parleremo dell’East Cost Custom Show, svoltosi a marzo a New York. Buona fortuna e… buona lettura!coltelli57 -

Currently I make a limited number of knives a year and participate in some exhibitions, where among other things I have won my first prizes:
in 2005 at LAME SOTTO I PORTICI in Romano di Lombardia (BG) I was awarded as "best table on display"
always in the same year at the CULTER-EXPO in Novegro (MI) as "best folding knife"
I was also ranked second in the competition organized by the magazine LAME D'AUTORE as the best fixed hunting blade
then in 2007 at "Scarperia" I won the third prize for best folding
but above all again in 2007, to my great satisfaction, I reached the degree of MASTER OF THE ITALIAN KNIVING CORPORATION, a recognition received at the first exam.
Presentation of the craftsman
Creating a knife by hand is what I consider a real art form.
The satisfaction of seeing an object that comes from one's own hands, that takes shape and reaches mechanical, artistic and aesthetic perfection is what pays me back the most for all the hours of work and effort it takes to create a knife completely. by hand. The passion for "cutting tools" has always been in me since I was a child and grew with me until the almost sudden decision to build my first knife myself, it was a "need", almost an inner necessity that I couldn't put off, my hands and my mind had to start creating, of course, what I had always been passionate about ... the knife!
I started at 40, in 2003, practically self-taught, I had no experience of manual work, but I had been a mechanical designer for many years and this allowed me to perfectly know the technique and all the various stages of mechanical processing.
Currently I am a member, with the rank of Master, which is the highest, of the Italian Knives Guild, an association recognized all over the world for the seriousness and above all quality of execution that all its members must maintain over time.
What I do now is what I consider my art form ..., to create "handcrafted, hunting and collectible knives".
They are knives made entirely by hand, only with an infinite series of files, a small drill for the holes and a sander for the concave grinding of the blades, nothing else!
I mainly make folding knives, which satisfy my desire to build perfect mechanical objects and perfection in the smallest details, even inside where they are not seen, is what distinguishes a knife created by hand, from one made industrially .The mechanics then must be made in the best possible way, without counting the hours of work, only in this way the final result is guaranteed.
Of course, over the years I have refined my technique and currently I have improved the mechanics even more by inserting a system of ball bearings on the blade rotation, which guarantee an absolutely perfect seal and allow the blade to close and open without the slightest friction. and with an incredible sweetness.
With regard to the blades then, I am experimenting with new types of hardening, which give hardnesses of 62-63 HRC and allow an exceptional edge hold and cutting quality for all types of use.
I make practically all the knives on an initial design of mine, they are all unique pieces made completely by hand down to the smallest details, one at a time, only in this way, in my opinion, a knife can be considered "artisanal".
Regarding the materials I use, I can say that for the blades I prefer RWL34 steel which is sintered from powders and guarantees the total absence of internal defects, sometimes I also use damascus, both stainless steel and carbon, for the uniqueness 'that give the knife, since each damask is always different from another.
For the handles, one of the most beautiful materials is the mammoth tooth, which can be found in a variety of wonderful colors, I also use fossil mammoth ivory, various briars, titanium and carbon fiber.
Most of the knives, however, are made entirely of steel, in order to then be engraved, always and strictly by hand, to transform the knife even more into a real work of art ...
