For both finally assume the archaic ritual significance to sanction the signing of a contract not yet institutionalized.
The handle is decorated with classic "dice eyes" that are meant to turn the knife in a valuable amulet against the evil eye. After marriage these knives were usually hung on the wall above the bed.
