Le prime notizie certe su questo coltello risalgono al 1848. Un esemplare, datato 1871, è conservato nell'Archivio di Stato di Firenze, allegato agli atti di un processo a carico di un pregiudicato. Su di esso è ben visibile il marchio di un fabbricante di Scarperia, Gustavo Buffi, la forma della lama è quella con dorso angolato, mantenuta anche nel Novecento e presente nei cataloghi di varie ditte scarperiesi.
