The SOG S1 Bowie Vietnam 5th Special Forces Group is one of the most representative knives in the history of SOG Specialty Knives and the model with which the American brand began its production during the second half of the 1980s. Made in Seki, Japan, the S1 was created as a tribute to the famous knives used by members of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) during the Vietnam War.

It is important to distinguish the S1 from the original “sterile” military knives actually used operationally during the conflict: the commercial SOG model instead reproduces the commemorative configuration of the famous MACV-SOG Bowie, featuring the U.S. Army Special Forces crest on the blade together with the marking “VIETNAM 5th SPECIAL FORCES GROUP”. This strong historical identity, combined with the quality of Japanese manufacturing, has made it one of the most recognizable and sought-after vintage SOG knives among collectors.

Production was entrusted to Ichiro Hattori in Seki, one of the most important names in Japanese knifemaking. The substantial Bowie blade is made from SK-5 carbon steel, hardened to approximately 57-58 HRC, with the characteristic dark gun-blue finish combined with polished surfaces. The handle uses traditional stacked leather washers stabilized with epoxy resin, completed by a sturdy metal guard and pommel.

This example features the classic SOG Specialty Knives logo on one side of the ricasso and, on the opposite side, the markings “SEKI-JAPAN”, the Special Forces crest and the inscription “VIETNAM 5th SPECIAL FORCES GROUP”. It is also accompanied by its original black leather sheath, complete with sharpening stone pocket and a large Special Forces crest embossed on the lower section. The original period identification label is still present on the back of the sheath.

The example offered here comes from a private collection and has actually been used. The blade shows scratches, abrasions and surface marks, both on the blued and polished areas; the leather handle has developed a noticeable patina and shows wear consistent with its age. The original sheath is also heavily used, with leather wear, marks and widespread abrasions. Its condition should therefore be considered good in relation to its age and nature, but it should not be compared with a display-grade or NOS example.

These very characteristics tell the story of an authentic SOG S1 made in Seki: a knife that, regardless of its cosmetic condition, retains all the appeal of one of the founding models of the brand and today represents a particularly significant piece for a collection dedicated to American military knives and Japanese SOG production from the 1980s and 1990s.

ROK, part of the SOLID knife family, is made from a single piece of aluminum or titanium and introduces two major innovations. In the 1980s, Jimmy Lile developed an elegant folding knife with a button lock mechanism, known as the “Lile Lock.” This patented system consists of a front button on the handle that unlocks the blade when opening and locks it in the cutting position, ensuring safety and ease of use. The monolithic nickel-silver guides support the D2 steel blade, while the micarta inserts on the scales give the knife a refined look.

This is a generously sized knife, produced in limited quantities between the 1970s and 1980s. The numbered examples bearing engravings such as the patent number 4148140 are now highly sought-after collector's items of great economic value.

Fallkniven Three Kronor TK1

The “Three Kronor” line blends the latest martensitic technologies with the ancient roots of the Swedish royal family.
In fact, these knives are the only ones that can boast the royal symbol of three crowns placed on the blade and on the beautiful wooden box that contains the knife and sheath.
The rolled steel used is currently one of the best industrial steels on the market and is composed of an inner sheet of SGPS from powder, a steel already used for the U2 model, at 62HRC coupled with two outer sheaths of VG2. The design of this legendary knife was born out of the meeting of a former soldier and bodyguard to President Roosevelt, Rex Applegate, and William Ewart Fairbairn, who, together with Edward Anthony Sykes, had given birth to the progenitor of modern military fighters: the Fairbairn-Sykes that accompanied the British Commandos during World War II. In defining the forms of the new knife, the two started from the very limitations that had emerged from the wartime use of the Fairbairn-Sykes, particularly fragility, limited utility in cutting use, and the tendency of the round-section handle to rotate in the hand.

Knife handcrafted by Master C.IC. (Corporazione Italiana Coltellinai - Italian Knife-makers Guild) Livio Montagna. Excellent reproduction of one of the most iconic knives ever: the classic Bowie. A knife created by Rezin Bowie in the early 19th century for his brother Jim Bowie, the famous American pioneer whose rather reckless life is now shrouded in legend.

Livio Montagna's excellent craftsmanship does justice to this piece of history with its classic and timeless stylistic features: the double guard, the clip point blade, the handle in natural material.

Knife handcrafted by Master C.IC. (Corporazione Italiana Coltellinai - Italian Knife-makers Guild) Livio Montagna. Reproduction of one of the various versions of the Arkansas Toothpick, legendary frontier knife of the American 1800s. Famous, often infamous, it generally has a 30 to 50 cm blade, rather narrow and sometimes symmetrical, dagger-style. Used mainly for hunting and personal defence.

Livio Montagna's version is aesthetically very similar to the Toothpick used in Expandables 2.

The knife is distinguished by an excellent overall balance, allowing control and precision in use. The finish is of a good standard.

For this new collaboration, between Coltelleria Collini of Busto Arsizio and Fox of Maniago, we chose the Rimor model. Only 9 exclusive pieces of this excellent bushcraft knife produced by Fox of Maniago have been made, using for this edition the Japanese V-Toku2 steel in 5mm Sanmai produced by the Japanese Takefu Steel instead of the Niolox used in the standard model. 

Specifically, the central sheet is the carbonaceous V-Toku2 at 62/63HRC and on the outer cheeks there is the stainless SUS410, so as to ensure not only a beautiful aesthetic effect, but also a very high cutting capacity, penetration and edge retention along with easy resharpening and maintenance. At the same time, the blade has remarkable corrosion resistance and an important increase in resilience given by the type of extreme steel and laminated structure.
