The most distinctive—and patented—feature of the Buckmaster Buck 184 is the presence of two removable, screw-mounted harpoons, or hooks. Their primary function is to provide an anchor point: the knife can, in fact, be used as a sort of throwing hook by attaching a rope to the ring on the pommel. The manufacturer claimed the grappling hooks had a holding capacity of up to 600 pounds.

In the case of the Navy SEALs, the requirement was for a knife that could also be used underwater and, if necessary, allow for the anchoring of equipment or vehicles to a submerged anchor point.
